As the capital of southwestern China’s Sichuan province, Chengdu is known for its unforgettably spicy foods, beautiful women and giant pandas. But did you know it is also regarded as the mobile and high-tech manufacturing center of China? With most of the top 10 mobile apps made by developers based in Chengdu, it is the developer hub of the country.
Long established as the national base for electronics and IT industries, this city has already attracted many multinational tech firms, including Intel, IBM, Nokia, Motorola, Microsoft, SAP, Ubisoft Entertainment, and Siemens.
With its Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone eager to scale up efforts to invest in and develop the mobile industry, this city was the natural pick for the location of our annual Global Mobile Game Developers Conference (GMGDC).
Getting directly to Chengdu from Silicon Valley:
Starting in June 2014 , United will start running a direct flight from San Francisco to Chengdu (SFO-CTU), with flights departing SFO on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. We recommend those flying from or through San Francisco to book this route, as it would be the most convenient way to get to Chengdu.
72-hour Visa Policy for International Transit Travelers:
Just like Beijing, Chengdu allows travelers from 51 countries to stay in the city for 72 hours, visa free. If your GMGDC and Chengdu visit is another stop on your business travels (meaning the origin and destination cities on your round-trip tickets are not the same), you can make use of this visa-free policy. For more details and to see whether this applies to you, we recommend that you refer to this travel guide and/or call a local visa-services agency to confirm.
Arriving to the Convention Center (and surrounding hotels) from the airport:
The Century City Convention Center is located in the south of Chengdu city, about a 15-min drive from downtown and a 20-min drive from the Shuangliu International Airport.
Although there is a Line 4 shuttle bus that you can take and it will drop you off near the Convention Center, unless you’re familiar with the city or feeling adventurous, we recommend that you spend about 60-100 CNY (or $10-16 USD) and take a taxi from the airport.
You can provide these details to your taxi driver upon arrival.
